I: Questions/Things to Ponder
-If you gave me some "help" for the FAQ in the past
3 weeks, and don't see your
changes in here, you might want to re-send whatever the new games
were. I lost a
bunch of e-mails when I changed over computers (dang hard drives
crashing), so that's
probably why you don't see your changes. Thanks and sorry for
the hassle.
-Coming next month - I'm going to get all the information about
keychain games I can
come up with. Look for tons of information on them in the next
post of the FAQ!
II: Where can I get the FAQ
Glad you asked! It's now available on 5 different web pages (more
coming soon)!
1. My web page at http://www.best.com/~cdyer
2. Digital Press' homepage at http://members.aol.com/digitpress/index.htm
3. Norman G. Sippel's web page at http://www.infinet.com/ngsippel/cv.html
4. Doug M's web page at http://www.freenet.edmonton.ab.ca/~dougm/index.html
If you would like to have the handheld FAQ on your web page, just
ask and I'll send
you a copy suitable for framing, or you can steal the one from
my page -- just let me
know, so I can add your page to the list!

IV: What is a handheld game/other questions
Does a handheld have to be held in your hands?
No, a handheld can sit on a table, the floor or your wrist for
that matter. Although
most handhelds, like video game controllers, are indeed held in
the hands.
Does a handheld have to take batteries?
Yes...and no! In order for a game to be classified as a handheld,
it must use batteries.
It can contain motors, but they must be powered by batteries.
You won't find a game
on this list that doesn't have normal batteries of some sort,
except in the case of solar
power and AC only games.
Does a handheld have to have lights (lcd's, led's, lights, vfd's)?
No. Some games that I would classify as handhelds have no lights.
A more important
description is that they have to have some kind of interaction
with the user, whether it
be lights, sounds or anything else.
What would I consider to be a game?
I consider a game to be anything that the user has to interact
with. It can mean
shooting down aliens, scoring touchdowns and avoiding bad guys,
or it can mean
drawing and making music.
How do I sort the games?
I sort by the following criteria: Company, then title.
Why don't I see all of Tiger's or any other new companies games
on here?
I could write a novel just listing Tiger's games alone, so I just
add the ones that I have
or other people actually write to me and tell me about. The same
holds true for most
of the newer lcd games, like those from Micro Games. I also don't
find these games as
exciting as the older ones. But, If you have a favorite Tiger
or Micro Games game, or
just want to see one added, just let me know and I'll gladly add
it! Now, if there were
a company that did new vfd games
How do I rate a games rarity?
Since I will probably get very little help (comments WELCOMED)
on the ratings,
these ratings are MY OWN findings. I've been collecting handhelds
for about 4 years
now, and have seen hundreds come and go, so I have a pretty good
idea of what's rare
and what's not. But, just for safety's sake, I have no information
to back up my
ratings besides my own personal finding experiences.
I rate games on four categories.
-First, every company now has a rating for how rare, in general,
their handhelds are.
This means that if a company is rated ER, then just about everything
by that company
is tough to find (tougher than a company rated RA, anyhow).
-Second, a game's relative rarity based on all other handhelds.
For instance, if I've
found 10 Coleco Game 1's, and only 1 Coleco Game 2's, I'll give
Game 1 a rating of
CO and Game 2 a rating of RA. Most companies came out with several
handhelds in
the same line, so rating them like that makes the most sense.
-The third way of rating is by rating the perceived value of a
game. For Example,
Tron (Tomy) is not IR (I've found 3, which I can't say for most
IR games), but since it
is a VERY popular license, and I have seen at least 2 go for $50
or above, I rated it IR.
In general, games with movie or arcade themes tend to fetch bigger
dollars, so most of
them are rated a bit high. After all, isn't that what IR stands
for?
-The fourth and final way of rating would be classified as desirable
or undesirable (play
wise, looks wise, etc.). This is shown by a +, ++, - or -- after
the ratings. A plus
would be a game that is desirable because of play/looks. A minus
would be
undesirable because of the same.
V: Trivia; General information
-Football II by Mattel has the 1-2 skill switch (like the other
Mattel games), plus you
can hold down "kick" while turning it on to select 3
and 4! 3 & 4 are much faster
versions of the same game.
-Here's an easy way to cheat on Tomy's Digital Derby. Hold down
the Start/Reset
button, and you'll never get hit. Of course, you'll never score,
either, but that's
another story.
-Funtronics is a division of Mattel, so their games are listed
in the Mattel section.
-Grandstand is the foreign distributor (as best we can tell) in
Europe for such
companies as Tomy, Epoch and maybe others. The games are the same
as their
American counterparts, with different names. Grandstand also made
original games, so
they have their own section in the list.
-Nintendo Game & Watches are some of my favorites. There has
been some question
as to who was actually in charge of these units, so I thought
I'd dig at Nintendo.
Here's the information I was able to get: In the beginning (the
guy didn't know the
year), Nintendo did everything -- importing, distribution, etc.
Then, in 1985,
Nintendo sold the distribution rights to a Nelsonic, the popular
watch makers.
Nelsonic distributed them until 1990, when M.Z.Berger took over.
I have a couple of
the M.Z.Berger Nintendo watches, so they obviously decided to
expand the line and
make games of their own. In addition, Micro Games USA fits into
there somewhere,
as one of the toys I recently bought by MG (Mario Brothers Walkie
talkies) has
pictures of about ten of the units on the back in Micro Games
packaging. When they
took over, I don't know. The MG Donkey Kong Jr. has a copyright
date of '90, so
maybe Micro Games distributed them while M.Z.Berger imported them.
Anyone else
have anything to add? I'd love to know the whole story!
-Mego Games had some sort of deal with Nintendo, also. The Mego
Games handhelds
that look like Game and Watches ARE Game and Watches, and the
titles are duplicates
of Nintendo games. For example, "Fireman, Fireman" is
"Fire" (I have both). The
Mego Games unit says "Nintendo" on the back. The Mego
game is the original screen
size, and the Nintendo game is the wide screen. The LCD images
are a little bit
different, but it's undeniably a Nintendo product. "Toss-up"
is "Ball", etc.
VI: Variation Central
-Baseball, Hip Pocket has been found in two different case colors.
Black and white.
The games are the same and so are the numbers.
-Baseball, Professional League (Radio Shack) has 2 different models.
One is number
60-2241 and one is number 60-2241A. Don't know what the actual
difference is,
though.
-Boxing Superstar (Bambino) has 2 different colored cases, white
and brown. Also, 2
color overlays have been found (on the brown case model), green
and blue.
-Computer Gin (Mattel) has 2 different models. One plays only
Gin and the other
plays Gin and Blackjack. Don't know the number differences are,
but the one that
plays Gin only is #1669-0340. UPDATE: Apparently, the model that
plays Gin and
Blackjack was a test model only. It is unclear if it was actually
released to the public
or to the magazines only.
-Copy Cat (Tiger) has several different models. The oldest one
I've found has two
selector switches, allowing for turning the game on and off and
switching game modes.
The redesigned model (#522) only has the on/off button. In addition,
3 colors (of #522)
have been found: yellow, white and clear. The original #520 is
also white.
-Electronic Quarterback. All parts of this game have variations!
Here are the ones that
I've found (all #1's were found together):
Box #1: "Realistic Electronic Sound Effects" on the
front. © 1978
Box #2: "As seen on TV" on the front. © 1980
Instruction #1: #76660C
Instruction #2: #76660B
Game #1: Small battery cover
Game #2: Larger battery cover
-Empire Strikes Back (Micro Games) has been re-released in different
packaging and
the mold of the game is different. The game is the same.
-Football 2 (Mattel) has several different variations. Here are
the 3 that I know exist:
1. Football 2, "replace batteries" sticker on back.
Normal information imprinted in
the plastic
2. Football 2, No sticker on back, the sticker information is
imprinted in the plastic.
3. Football II, ?? (don't have one of these)
-Return of the Jedi (Micro Games) has been re-released in different
packaging and the
mold of the game is different. The game is the same.
-Soccer (Mattel) apparently has 2 different product numbers. #1052-0330
and #2678-
0380. Don't know if there is any difference in the units themselves.
-Space Invader (Entex) comes in two different colors. The more
common version is
black (C 1980), while the rarer of the two is gray (C 1981) and
has an AC plug. In
addition, there are 2 variations of the black version. One has
the battery compartment
on the right and one on the left (the boards are also different
to allow for the batteries).
-Star Wars (Micro Games) has been re-released in different packaging
and the mold of
the game is different. The game is the same.
-Unisonic 21 comes in two different styles. Red buttons and blue
buttons. The cases
and product numbers are different also.
-Zelda Watch (Nintendo) has been seen in 3 different colors; Black,
Pink and White.
Same game, same everything, just different colored casings and
watch bands.
VII: Test Mode Mania
Several vfd games contain a test mode, where you can sit and watch
a graphics display
on the screen. They all start with the machine off, and require
you to turn the unit on,
while holding certain combinations of buttons. When you get one
to work, you'll most
likely need to turn the unit off, as many of them are in-escapable.
So, try everything to
find those not listed, and please let me know if you find any!
Here are some that I
know exist:
1. Defender (Entex): Turning the machine on while holding down
on the fire button
will make it run through a quick graphics test and then put it
into a demo mode. The
demo mode is the same each time, however the reverse, hyperspace
and smart bomb
buttons are "active." (You can help/alter the demo by
pressing these buttons while it is
playing and thus change the normal demo pattern!) The smart bomb
button is
especially effective :) Press start to end the demo.
2. Donkey Kong (Coleco): Well, this isn't a test mode, rather
a code
Hold down
on the joystick when turning the unit on. Then, when turning the
unit on, press up on
the joystick. This will cause you to skip the intro. Music and
the first few levels!
3. Galaxian 2 (Entex): Turning the game on while holding the missile
button will start
the graphics test.
4. Game & Watches: All Game and Watches (including the standups)
run a test mode
when you first put the batteries in.
5. Q-Bert (Parker Brothers): Holding any direction on the controller
when turning the
unit on will cause the unit to beep. Let go of the controller,
and then press any
direction on the controller and different things will happen.
Upper Right: High pitch
test. Lower Right: Lower pitch test. Upper Left: graphics check
(hold to scroll up).
Lower Left: Top number check.
6. Spiders (Entex): Turning the game on in demo mode, and the
game will
automatically run through a graphics test.
7. Stargate (Entex): Holding all the buttons while turning the
machine on will start the
graphics test.
8. Super Cobra (Entex): Holding the missile button while turning
the unit on will start
the graphics test, then game demo mode (which, by the way is different
ever time!).
9. Tomy 3-D games: All Tomy 3-D games do a self test when you
first turn them on.
10. Tron (Tomy): Turning the game on will automatically run through
a short
graphics test.
11. Zaxxon (Coleco): Holding the fire button when you turn it
on puts it into a
graphics test, followed by a demo mode. Holding down on the stick
when you turn it
on does the graphics test only.
VIII: Handheld List Key
Name field Key:
-AT&F = Arcade Time & Fun (see below). These are Video
Technologies line of
larger games similar to their other T&F (see below) games.
They have a large 1.2"
diameter disk which provides four-directional movement control.
Size: 4 1/2" X 3" X 3/8"
-D3000 = Digipro 3000
=G+ = Game Plus. These lcd units look like a mini Gameboy (roughly).
The
screens are TINY, and the games are less than inspiring. In fact,
if it weren't for the
changed "sprites", the games would be exactly the same.
The cases are creme colored,
and have 3 purple buttons on the left ("left", "right"
and "level", two pink buttons on
the right ("start" and "R") and 3 orange "S"election
buttons.
-G&W = Game & Watch. These were actually distributed by
Micro Games USA, but
are made by Nintendo, thus labeled as Nintendo. Some of the original
G&W's came
with two red stickers to put over the battery cover "to prevent
babies from removing
and eating the batteries". Ahh, yeah, thanks Nintendo. :)
There are several different
types of G&W's, however, all of them contain the following
features: Clock/Alarm, 2
game difficulties (A & B) and some sort of directional controls
with action buttons.
-G&WC = Crystal G&W. Probably one of the coolest versions
of the G&W I've
seen. The screens are a little less than 3"X1 1/4",
and the unit is 5 3/4" wide X 2 1/2"
tall. The ACL and Alarm buttons are different than the normal
G&W's (there's no
holw, rather a pressure sensitive "plate"), otherwise,
everything pretty much remains
the same.
-G&WO = original: Single unit, usually with directional controls
on one side and
action button on the other. Size: ??
-G&WM = Multi screen: The hinge is on the top, with the directional
controls/action
button on the bottom portion, usually containing a screen on the
top and bottom
portions. Size: 3" X 4 1/2" X 1" (closed)
-G&WP = Panorama screen. The coolest of all the G&W's!
-G&WS = Supercolor: Vertically oriented color screen.
-G&WT = Triple screen: three screens are better than one!
-G&WU = Multi screen: Similar to the G&WM version, but
opens like a book. The
hinge is on the left, and there are controls on both sides (allowing
for 2 player action
on all games).
-G&WV = Vs. micro system: These contain 2 movable controllers
that are attached to
the main unit with wires (allowing for two player action). The
screens are much wider
than the normal G&W screen, but the standard G&W features
are still there.
-G&WW = Wide screen: This is the most common format for G&W's.
They are
slightly larger than the G&WO's, with the same basic layout.
-MT&F = Mini Time & Fun. These are Video Technologies
line of smaller games
similar to their other T&F (see below) games, only with a
smaller screen.
-PA = Pocket Arcade. Sega's short lived line of handhelds, taken
over by Tiger
Electronics.
-PG = Pocket Games. Micro Games line of small handhelds.
-PLCD = Pocket LCD games. MGA (Micro games) released small games.
-POP = Palm operated play games contain the following features:
Clock/Calendar/Alarm, Action buttons (most of the time 3), and
A&B games. Size: 2
1/2" X 4 1/2" X 1/2"
-POPDS = Palm Operated Play Dual Screen games. These are the same
as the POP
games, but they have two different games on the same screen (controlled
by the A&B
buttons).
-POPR = Palm Operated Play Radio games. These are basically the
same idea as the
POP games, but contain a radio, are a bit longer and need 4 watch
batteries to work the
game and radio. The controls for the radio are on the right side
of the game.
Size: 5" X 2 1/2" X 1/2"
-PP = Power Play. Games by Playtime. No other information known.
-P&T = Play & Time. A name used by Masudaya for their
line of handheld "Thumb
Power" games. These games have the following features: Clock,
Alarm, Stopwatch,
A & B games. Size: 2 1/2" X 4 1/2" X 1/2"
-R-Zone = Tiger's new "Virtual Boy" type system that
straps onto your head and
has a single lcd image in front of your eyes. The system takes
cartridges, and so far,
all systems come with a cartridge.
-T&F = Time & Fun. A name used by Video Technology for
their line of handheld
games. The time and fun series contain the following features:
Clock (in two time
zones), Alarm, Date, Stopwatch, GA & GB buttons, and
come in various sizes (see the other T&F descriptions).
-TO = Time Out. Mego released games.
-TST&F = Tooth Sporty Time & Fun. These are the same as
the T&F games, only in
the form of a pocket watch on a heavy nylon cord. The games are
the same as the
Mini Time & Fun series. Size: 2" X 2 1/2" X 1/2"
-VRT-X = The marketing term Tiger uses for their new lcd holographic
games. They
use a retractable light on the top so you can see the holograph
image. Pretty cool!
Display Type Key:
-clcd = Colored lcd (see below) display. Only used when different
color lcd's are used
on the same screen.
-cled = Colored led (see below) display. Only used when different
colors are used on
the same screen, whether it be from a color overlay or different
colored led's.
-lcd = Liquid Crystal Display. Black and white display. The sprites
are almost always
black and the background is white (but can be reversed, by reversing
the display).
-led = Light emitting Diode. Most of the time, these are red,
but other colors exist.
Oh course, that's what cled is for, now isn't it?
-lights = Light bulb display (very old technology)
-no lights = There are no lighted parts to the game. Most of these
are music/drawing
related.
-vfd = Vacuum Fluorescent Display. These handhelds use something
called dopents to
display color sprites. NOTE: Several of the games that were previously
listed as clcd
are actually vfd.
Battery Type Key:
BC (button cell) = There are several numbers of button cell batteries.
I've chosen to
just use bc, as there are several numbers for the same watch battery.
The most
common type of battery I've found is LR44 (A76). There are several
others, though.
Other Information Key:
(anything else important to anyone, just let me know)
1P = 1 Player game
2PA = 1 to 2 Player Alternating
2PS = 1 to 2 Player Simultaneous
4P = 1 to 4 Player game
A = Games that are based on an Arcade game (I'm pretty strict
with this).
B = Games that are built into a cassette player (walkman type).
C = Games that have add-on cartridges for them.
D = Games that contain more than one type of game (not difficulties,
actual games).
E = Educational game.
F = Foreign game. Some of these could have come out over here...
G = Games that contain a calculator
H = Games that have additional parts (Pegs, money, etc.)
I = Games that contain overlays/inlays (mostly educational games).
M = Games that are motorized. Mostly used by Tomy.
P = Games that are in the form of a pocket watch.
R = Games that include an AM Radio.
T = Games that are better played on the tabletop.
W = Games that are in the form of a watch.
Rarity Key:
- = The game is undesirable, most of the time because of the play
value and looks.
-- = The game is VERY undesirable for the reasons above.
+ = The game is desirable for the reasons above.
++ = The game is VERY desirable for the reasons above.
CS = Currently selling. Places like Toys R Us, K.B. Toys or anywhere
that carries
handhelds would probably have these (no guarantees, each store
carries a different
selection).
FO = Foreign games. These would be impossible for me to rate
Pretty much all
foreign games are ER at the least over here, but in their country
of origin, they could
be common.
EC = Extremely common. I see an EC game just about every time
I'm looking.
CO = Common. I see these quite often.
SC = Scarce. More rare than a common, but still not "rare".
RA = Rare. From here on up, I expect to pay a bit of money when
acquiring them in
auctions/etc..
ER = Extremely Rare. I consider myself lucky to find these, and
will pay good
money for them.
IR = Incredibly Rare. These are the ones that you see once in
a lifetime, if you're
lucky! Truly the elite group of handhelds.
?? = I have no idea. If you can help with a ?? game, I'd greatly
appreciate it!

* = Same cases, different games.
** = This, unlike so many others is a complete rip-off of a Game
& Watch. The
graphics for the game are directly from the Bomb Sweeper G&W.
The case, however
is much more impressive than the G&W's case.
*1 = Same cases, different games.

XIV: Repairing Handhelds
Being a handheld collector for a long time, I have seen a rather
large number of
problems with handhelds. It's unavoidable. Your friend says that
he's got your
favorite handheld when you were young, but it doesn't work. So,
you take it, and it
sits on around taking up space. My goal here is to give you a
few tips to make that
handheld work again. There are thousands of handhelds, and each
one is different, so
giving exact direction for each handheld would be virtually impossible.
If you have
one that's broken, and I have it, most likely, I've taken it apart
and can give you some
general hints on how to fix it. Just ask!
Commonly needed items:
-Screwdriver. Most handhelds can be fixed with a regular Phillips
screwdriver, but it
also helps to have a smaller set for the smaller games. The only
real problem that I've
found is fixing the older Mattel handhelds. They have special
triangle screws, for
which I haven't ever found a screwdriver. Does one exist?
-Tape. I use tape a lot to hold things down, etc.
-Sandpaper. Use only sandpaper made for plastic model kits; regular
grades found
elsewhere will be too course and might damage your units small
and delicate parts.
Testors sells an assortment pack of very fine, model kit grade
sandpapers. Check with
your local hobby shops, or any place that sells modeling supplies.
-Brasso. This does wonders for fixing slightly scratched or dirty
display screens!
Problems:
1. Corroded battery contacts
2. Non-reacting buttons
3. Non-reacting potentiometers (volume knobs, etc.)
4. Broken Wires
5. LCD screens
6. Dirty or scratched cases or screens.
7. Mattel Games and their weird screws
1. Corroded battery contacts
This is the most common problem with handhelds. People leave the
batteries in for
years and they leak, causing a blue "foam" to cover
the contacts and plastic around
them. This is a relatively easy problem to fix, as long as it's
not major. Most of the
time, it's not even necessary to take the unit apart, although
if the problem is major, it
will require to take the unit apart to get at all the "foam".
Solution:
There are a cornucopia of things you can try!
-Use sandpaper on the contacts.
-Try using Hydrogen Peroxide on the battery contacts. If you can,
dip the contacts into
the Hydrogen Peroxide. If not, pour it over the contacts and watch
it go!
-Use a combination of baking soda and water. This works best using
toothbrush to rub
the contacts.
-Use Coca-Cola. Seriously; it is very acidic, and reacts with
the "foam," cleaning it off
very easily. Try it, but use some caution. The only problem with
this method is that
you have the sticky residue left after doing it, so you'll need
to clean it with water
afterwards.
If the problem is really bad, the contact will probably break
off. If this happens,
there's really not much you can do, unless you find another contact
and solder it into
the place of the other one.
And, if the acid has gotten to the PC board, it's probably toast
2. Non-reacting buttons:
Most handhelds have buttons that need to be pressed in order to
get the main characters
to do specific actions. If you run across and handheld where everything
else works
fine, but the character doesn't jump or throw etc. or the buttons
stick when pressed,
use this solution to fix your problem.
Solution:
Take apart the handheld and get to the buttons. Under the buttons
are rubber pads that
touch a PC board. Take the rubber pad off and clean the little
black dot on it with a
rubber pencil eraser (use the stand-alone type of eraser, not
those on the end of a
pencil; too much chance of scratching the small parts). In addition,
clean the PC board
where the button touches with the eraser (you should be able to
tell, because most of
the time, it's discolored). You should be able to get the unit
to work without putting it
back together, but if not, put the unit back together then test.
You may need to clean
the contacts more than once, depending on how dirty they are.
Alternate solution:
If that doesn't work for you, try rubbing alcohol on the PC board
(not the rubber pad).
3. Potentiometers (volume knobs, etc.)
These are any knobs that turn instead of pressing. After years
of non-use, these tend to
get dirty and not work properly. If you find this happens to you,
use the following
solution to fix your problem:
Solution:
Use spray products such as Radio Shack's TV control or tuner cleaners.
("Zero
residue" cleaners are even better.) Just carefully spray
a little inside the pots' control
box, and turn the knob all the way up and down, to clean off the
grunge.
6. Scratched cases or screens
Another big problem with handhelds is scratched cases and screens.
There are several
solutions you can use to clean the outside of the units and most
are available at your
local hardware store. Here are some that some of the readers have
found to work well:
-Meiguar's Mirror Glaze #17. Best used for displays, this is an
ultra-fine abrasive that
gently removes the surface layer restoring optical clarity to
the display. NOTE:
Although completly harmless to plastics, care should be taken
around painted
letters/numbers as it can damage/remove them.
-Meiguar's Clear Plastic Detailer. This is best used to keep handhelds
in good shape.
It restores shine and creates an anti-static surface that repels
dust.
-Goo Gone. This is best used to remove sticker residue off the
outside of the handheld.
Can also be used for boxes, but be careful, as it will take the
color off of anything that
